Acne Truths and Myths
For so long a time, people actually believed that acne is caused by poor hygiene and poor diet. In fact, if you have acne, you will most likely be advised to cleanse your skin, sometimes more frequently than necessary, to get rid of the dirt, so to speak.

Unfortunately, washing very often and aggressively can reduce your skin’s defense mechanism by removing the natural lipids of your skin. To compensate, the follicle will tend to produce excess sebum which can cause acne. If you have to
wash your face, do it no more than three times a day, and use a gentle cleanser to wash your face with.
Stress, too, can be a contributing factor to the development of acne.

If you think that getting a tan is a healthy solution to acne, you are mistaken; because, while
sun exposure may reduce acne blemishes by drying them out, it cannot however prevent new acne blemishes from forming.

Besides, staying too long in the sun can dry your skin, stimulating your sebaceous glands to produce more oil, and make you more prone to cancer and wrinkles.

For many people, having acne can be really disgusting. It disturbs your physical appearance, and this can have an unfavourable effect on your self-esteem. Thus, when you have acne, have it treated immediately. The sooner you submit yourself to treatment, the better chances you have of avoiding permanent scarring and emotional stress.
It’s also been said that certain foods, particularly junk foods, can worsen acne break-outs.

The truth is, what you eat has no or very little effect on acne, although, of course, you are always encouraged to eat nutritious foods.

Using heavy make-up or oily make-up can worsen acne.

When choosing make-up products, go for those that are labelled non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic, or look for components like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid which help fight acne.
