The Skin
The skin is one of the most important parts of the human body. It is the organ that covers the whole body, protecting all other organs and is first and foremost at risk of being damaged unless cared for. Taking care of the skin must be properly done because it is not only essential to beauty but also to the wellness of the human being.
Skin is the main reason of having normal body temperature. It normalizes temperature to 37°, which is the body’s core temperature needed for homeostasis, through perspiration when too much heat is exposed to the body.
Aside from helping in cleaning our bodies by excreting excess salt and sweat, the nerve endings give the skin the sense of touch. In addition, the skin is also the major processor of Vitamin D and ultraviolet radiation that are essential for the intake of calcium and phosphate.
With the many functions for the body, the skin is a vital organ that will need constant cleaning and maintenance to help continue its job. Keeping the skin healthy can cost a lot or even take a lot of time but at least, it would be worthwhile. Having healthy skin can result in plenty of benefits that are beyond physical attributes.
Being in the frontline of the defense system, the skin is the barrier to infections, microorganisms and other substances.
A type of macrophage called Langerhans cells, which is found within the dermis protect the body by eating up organisms that are foreign.
Together with sebum, keratin layers act as barrier for water and melanocytes prevent ultraviolet light from entering the skin.
Dead cells hardened by keratin, also known as fingernail or toenails, exist to protect the ends of the fingers and toes from any harm. Also adding protection to the eyes and head are hair follicles.
