Smoking and What It Can Do To Your Skin
For probably the thousandth time, you must have heard that smoking can cause lung cancer. What you do not know, however, is that smoking can damage your skin as well. In fact, smoking ranks third (the first two being sun and chemicals) among the many factors that cause premature skin aging.
Accordingly, the effects of smoking on the skin will start to be visible after 10 years of smoking. Thus, a sixteen year-old will already show signs of skin aging by the time she’s only 26 years old.
Why and how smoking affects the skin can be explained by the fact that with smoking there is a narrowing of blood vessels, including those that are responsible for bringing oxygen and the much needed nutrients to the outer layers of the skin. Your skin is therefore deprived of the essential oxygen and nutrients, particularly Vitamin A.
Vitamin A, as you must know, is necessary in helping your skin generate new cells to replace the dead ones. It helps in the production of collagen which gives the skin elasticity. Without Vitamin A, you lose your line of defense against bacteria and certain infections. Alcohol, too, destroys your supply of Vitamin A, so smoking and drinking alcohol at the same time are not a good combination, especially when it comes to the health of your skin.
Moreover, without sufficient oxygen, harmful free radicals may invade your skin, damaging elastic fibers and collagen, resulting to the appearance of wrinkles. It has also been said that constantly pursing your lips when inhaling smoke can eventually cause wrinkles to form around the mouth. The heat, too, coming from the tip of the burning cigarette can damage your skin.
If you therefore want to achieve healthy and beautiful skin, you will have to give up smoking and alcohol at the same time. It really is not that big a sacrifice as you think, especially when you consider the many benefits to your skin and general well being.
